Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Parish Council Meeting Minutes
June 10, 2025 – 6:20 p.m.
Parish Center
Present:
Fr. Remi Okere, Brian Hoffman, Sheila Adams, Jaynane Hardie, Jennifer Fehrer
Call to Order & Prayer:
The meeting was called to order at 6:20 p.m. by Jennifer Fehrer. Fr. Remi Okere led the opening prayer.
Approval of Minutes:
The minutes from the April 8, 2025 meeting were reviewed. A correction was noted: the church roof was last replaced in 2014, not 1996.
Agenda Items
Buildings, Grounds & Safety Committee:
The final cost of the lock replacement project came in $154 under budget.
Elevator locks were not changed, as replacing them could create difficulty for parishioners who rely on the elevator.
There is currently no accurate record of how many elevator keys are in circulation or who holds them. Known key holders are:
Jaynane Hardie (3 keys; 1 will go to Ron Altenhofen for maintenance)
Pat Thompson (possibly 2 keys)
Dr. Charles Clark (1 key)
Evelyn Pollard (1 key)
Dean Pelligrino (1 key)
Erma Wadle (1 key)
A list will be compiled and kept in the parish office.
The basement door lock will be replaced—this was an oversight in the original project.
Andy McNish will assess the broken concrete around the church and provide a bid for repairs.
An electrician has been contacted to evaluate electrical concerns in the rectory.
Ron Pollard and Jason Fehrer installed a PVC pipe to help divert water away from the northeast side of the church.
Collaboration Meeting:
A joint meeting with the Finance Council, Parish Council, and Buildings, Grounds & Safety Committee will be held on June 17, 2025 to discuss the church roof project. The goal is to streamline decision-making by having all key groups present rather than passing questions and concerns between separate meetings.
Finance Committee:
Next meeting scheduled for June 26, 2025.
The parish is currently about $6,000 short of meeting the Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) goal.
Fr. Remi asked Jennifer to create a bulletin write-up to inform parishioners of the shortfall.
Religious Education:
8 students received Confirmation and 3 students received First Communion this year.
Confirmation preparation will move to a 2-year program due to the limitations of a one-year format.
Sacramental prep classes will be held on Sundays to encourage family Mass attendance.
The youth mission trip will be July 27–August 2. 13 individuals from Sacred Heart will participate in Kansas City, KS.
Activities Committee:
Hosted a Confirmation lunch with the Bishop, candidates, and families. 50 were served.
A parish potluck will be held June 27 in honor of the visiting LaSalette Missionary.
Women of Sacred Heart (WOSH):
Raised $1,800 during their spring rummage sale.
Remaining items were donated to: Inter-Church Council, The Well (Knoxville), the women's shelter in Seymour, and relief efforts in Ukraine.
There was disappointment that no help was available for packing up after the sale.
Knights of Columbus:
Hosting a thank-you dinner on June 12 for those who assisted with the Lenten fish fries.
Fish fries raised $12,000 with $2,000 less in expenses than the previous year.
A freewill tenderloin dinner held after Mass on June 8 raised $1,000 for the Youth Mission Trip.
Diocesan Update (Fr. Remi):
The Bishop has issued a decree establishing deaneries.
Sacred Heart will be part of a deanery with Leon, Corydon, Chariton, Osceola, and Mt. Ayr.
Brief discussion was held about increasing collaboration between parish groups (WOSH, KC’s, Activities Committee) for fundraisers and fellowship events to reduce workload and enhance unity.
Jaynane will bring this to WOSH
Brian to mention to the Knights
Sheila will speak to the Activities Committee
Olivewood Carvings:
Will be available for purchase at Sacred Heart on June 21 & 22.
Inter-Church Council:
Volunteers are needed to help with Tuesday evening meals (4:30–6:00 p.m.) at the Methodist Church, where over 130 meals are served weekly (either picked up or delivered).
Ecumenical Services:
June 29 at 9:00 a.m. on the Chariton Square (4th of July celebration)
July 20 at 9:00 a.m. at the County Fairgrounds
Adjournment:
Meeting adjourned at 7:47 p.m.
